A couple of weeks ago a lot of people in the digital industry were speculating that there had been an algorithm update by Google which experts nicknamed the ‘Fred update.’ Back around the 7th March, there had reportedly been large traffic declines of between 50 and 90 percent for a number of content-based sites.
It has now been confirmed by Google’s Gary Illyes. He says after reviewing around 70 content sites that all the websites that got hit had two things in common. That all sites were content driven via a blog format or similar. He also said that the large part of each website was taken up by ad placements. Furthermore, he speculated that majority of these ‘content’ based sites were built for the sole purpose of generating ad revenue and not to benefit the user with the content generated.
